Argentine striker Germán Berterame, who is a naturalized Mexican citizen, was officially unveiled as Inter Miami’s newest player, joining the team that features Lionel Messi after the U.S. club paid his 5 million release clause. With this, the attacker brings an end to his time with Rayados de Monterrey and to more than five years in Liga MX.

Berterame’s arrival in MLS marks one of the most significant signings of the market, not only for its sporting impact but also for Messi’s direct influence on the striker’s decision.

A call from Messi changed Berterame’s future

Despite his stability and leading role at Rayados, where he established himself as a key figure and earned a call-up to the Mexican national team, Germán Berterame chose to change course. According to sources close to the matter, a phone call from Lionel Messi was decisive in the striker accepting Inter Miami’s offer.

For months, the Monterrey board received offers for the striker, including options to move to European soccer. However, none of them managed to convince him as much as the opportunity to share a locker room with the Argentine world champion.

Why did Germán Berterame go to Inter Miami?

Although officially the deal was finalized by paying the release clause, the signing had other key factors. Berterame’s Argentine background and Messi’s strong influence in the Inter Miami locker room weighed heavily in the final decision.

Lionel Messi has become a central figure in the club’s sporting project, with direct influence over the arrival of Argentine and Latin American players in MLS—a decisive factor in Berterame’s decision to accept the challenge.

Germán Berterame’s stats in Liga MX

Germán Berterame arrived in Liga MX in 2019 to bolster Atlético San Luis, where he quickly stood out for his goal-scoring ability. His performance caught the attention of Rayados, who made a strong bid to sign him.

Although he was one of the most consistent forwards for the Monterrey club, Berterame departs without winning a league title.

According to Transfermarkt, these were his numbers in Liga MX:

  • 226 matches played
  • 87 goals
  • 16 assists
  • 29 yellow cards
  • 3 red cards

With his arrival at Inter Miami, Germán Berterame will look to establish himself as one of the team’s offensive stars and adapt to a growing league like Major League Soccer, now under the international spotlight thanks to Lionel Messi’s presence.
