The National Weather Service (NWS) issued alerts for a major winter storm in the United States, which will impact various regions with heavy snowfall, gusty winds, and disruptions to travel. According to forecasts, snow accumulation could reach up to 4 feet (over 1.20 meters) in some areas, posing a significant risk to the population.

Weather alerts in New York for heavy snowfall

The warnings were issued on the morning of January 19 for northern Herkimer County, New York, where the most severe conditions are forecast to occur between 7:00 p.m. on January 19 and 7:00 a.m. on January 21.

According to information released by Newsweek, snow accumulation is estimated at between 6 and 12 inches, which could lead to road closures, transportation disruptions, and delays in essential services.

New York counties at highest risk

Winter storm alerts will remain in effect until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the counties of:

  • Oswego
  • Lewis
  • Jefferson

In these regions, snow accumulation could range from 60 to 120 centimeters, with areas such as Watertown, Tug Hill, and Fort Drum being the most affected.

Other counties, such as Niagara, Genesee, and northern Erie, would see lesser accumulations of 25 to 50 centimeters, while Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and southern Erie could receive between 20 and 60 centimeters, with alerts in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

Recommendations for the winter storm

In light of these extreme conditions, authorities recommend:

  • Avoid driving except in strictly necessary cases.
  • Stay informed thru official channels and weather services.
  • Prepare basic supplies in case of power outages.

Additionally, delays and flight cancelations are anticipated, so travelers are advised to contact their airlines to check for any changes to their itineraries.

Michigan will also face severe conditions

The winter storm will also impact the state of Michigan, where counties such as Lake, Newaygo, and Kent could experience wind gusts of up to 64 km/h and snow accumulations of 7 to 12 centimeters.

In other areas such as Emmet, Manistee, Kalkaska, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Antrim, Otsego, Benzie, Wexford, Missaukee, and Charlevoix counties, snowfall could reach 5 to 9 inches, while in parts of Chippewa County accumulations are estimated at 10 to 23 centimeters, according to Newsweek.

Authorities urge the public to monitor the phenomenon’s progress thru platforms such as AccuWeather, as well as to stay alert for possible evacuation alerts or updates from the National Weather Service.
