Sunny Isles Beach history: Early Acquisition and Growth of Sunny Isles
Sunny Isles Beach history: In 1920, private investor Harvey Baker Graves acquired a 2.26-square-mile area that would become Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. By 1922, Graves had expanded his holdings by purchasing a half-mile stretch of oceanfront property from the Tatum Brothers Model Land Company, naming the area Sunny Isles. He aimed to develop the site into a welcoming community. The completion of the Haulover Bridge in 1925 improved access to the area from Miami Beach, prompting increased interest from developers who undertook projects to widen the roadways.

Incorporation and Urban Transformation in Sunny Isles
The city officially became known as The City of Sun and Sea when it was incorporated in 1997. Historically, Sunny Isles Beach began as a modest coastal strip lined with mid-century motels, serving as a tourist destination with small beachfront accommodations. Over the years, it transformed significantly, especially from the late 20th century onward, evolving into a location defined by larger residential properties and luxury high-rises.
Between 1987 and 1988, significant construction efforts shaped the modern layout of Sunny Isles Beach. A notable development in the area’s upkeep occurred in 2017, when the first truck haul for a beach renourishment project in this location took place under the direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District.
Geography and Community Impact
Positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, Sunny Isles Beach offers a combination of natural beauty and urban development, transitioning from its early tourist-focused identity to a community marked by architectural landmarks and a dynamic real estate market. It has attracted a mix of residents and investors who have contributed to the city’s ongoing growth and diversification.
