AAA Projects Record Growth in Cruise Industry with 21.7 Million Americans Expected to Cruise Next Year

AAA projects that approximately 21.7 million Americans will take cruises next year, marking a new record. The organization anticipates an 8.4% increase in cruise participation from 2024 to 2025, followed by a 4.5% rise between 2025 and 2026.

Cold-weather cruising is gaining popularity, with demand rising sharply for trips to colder destinations. New cruise ships are being designed to be more spacious, environmentally friendly, and immersive, while their itineraries are expanding to reach more distant locations and allow longer stays.

The cruise industry is also introducing new ships, private islands, and investing heavily in technology and sustainability. Cruise ship sizes are expected to continue growing, with major brands unveiling vessels exceeding 200,000 tons in the coming decade.

In 2023, cruise travel rebounded to 107% of its 2019 passenger levels, significantly outperforming the 12% growth seen in overall international tourism arrivals. Changes in guest demographics are also influencing fleet expansions and innovations within the industry.

This forecast highlights continued expansion and transformation in the cruise industry’s role within the broader tourism sector.
