Buena Vista Social Club revives a story rooted in cuban music

Inspired by true events and the celebrated album that united icons of Cuban music, the musical takes Omara Portuondo’s story as its starting point. The singer—known as the “Queen of Feeling”—is away from the recording studio when she receives an offer that compels her to revisit her past and consider a return to the stage.

From this premise, the production explores the memories, personal bonds, and pivotal moments that shaped the protagonists’ lives, while the songs transport the audience through the diverse rhythms of the Cuban musical tradition. A live band accompanies the performance, reviving the repertoire that made the Buena Vista Social Club album a landmark in Latin music.

The show premiered at New York’s Atlantic Theater Company in December 2023 and arrived on Broadway in March 2025. During awards season, it garnered ten Tony nominations and four competitive wins, as well as special recognition for the production’s musicians. The original Broadway cast recording also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
