What began as a simple classroom assignment in a Miami-Dade County elementary school has blossomed into a transformative nonprofit organization that has touched the lives of thousands of individuals living with neurological and developmental conditions across the United States.
Mind&Melody, the nonprofit co-founded by Miami-Dade County Public Schools graduate Cristina Rodriguez, has successfully delivered more than 16,000 interactive music sessions to participants in Florida, New Mexico, and New York. The organization currently serves over 2,000 individuals annually, bringing the healing power of music to children and adults facing autism, dementia, intellectual disabilities, and various other neurological challenges.
From Fifth-Grade Cellist to Healthcare Innovator
Rodriguez’s remarkable journey began at Dr. Gilbert L. Porter Elementary School, where she enrolled in an after-school orchestra program led by music teacher Michael Erwin. The young student had her heart set on playing the violin, but fate had other plans. She was assigned the cello instead, a decision that would ultimately redirect the entire trajectory of her life.
Having immigrated to the United States from Venezuela at age seven, Rodriguez found music to be an invaluable bridge while learning English and adapting to her new home. The cello became her constant companion and source of comfort during those formative years.
“I would come home from school, close the door to my room, and practice for hours without noticing how much time had passed,” Rodriguez shared in a statement released by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Her musical education continued through Southwood Middle School’s prestigious music magnet program, where she honed her skills before earning one of only four freshman cello positions at Coral Reef Senior High School, from which she graduated in 2011.
The Intersection of Music and Neuroscience
During her time at Coral Reef, Rodriguez developed a profound interest in the relationship between music and brain science. This curiosity led her to pursue internships at two renowned Miami institutions:
- Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she gained exposure to clinical settings
- The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, where she explored neurological research
These experiences reinforced her growing belief that music could play a significant role in supporting health and overall well-being. The concept that would eventually become Mind&Melody began taking shape during her volunteer work at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, formerly known as Miami Children’s Hospital. There, Rodriguez envisioned using interactive music to engage young patients during their treatments.

What sets Mind&Melody apart from traditional music therapy programs is its participatory approach. Rather than having musicians perform for audiences, the nonprofit creates an environment where participants actively engage in the musical experience. Sessions encourage attendees to:

She was recently honored as a L’OrĆ©al Paris Woman of Worth, a prestigious award that recognizes women making significant contributions to society through their nonprofit work. Upon receiving the recognition, Rodriguez emphasized the crucial role that Miami-Dade County Public Schools educators played in shaping her path.
